Everyday Power

Everyday Power started as an idea in Jeff’s New York City apartment in 2010.

After coming home from teaching his 7th grade English class at a public school in Harlem, Jeff was disappointed with how one lesson finished.

That day, Jeff’s class examined Tupac’s poem, A Rose That Grew From Concrete and came to their own conclusions about what the poem meant to them.

Next, it was the students’ turn to create their own poem comparing life to something else, just as Tupac did. The students were given laptops to help them generate ideas and provide additional inspiration for their project.

After circling around the room, Jeff noticed that most of his class had celebrity gossip, clothing, sneakers and music videos on their screens.

Something had to change…

Jeff starting seeing much of the media as a distraction that takes time away from building a self-determined life.

Two years later Jeff founded Everyday Power, a site dedicated to providing relevant and meaningful material he felt his students needed to experience. Jeff was already a huge fan of authors such as Dr. Wayne DyerMarianne WilliamsonMaya AngelouRalph Waldo EmersonSun Tzu, Don Miguel Ruiz, Stephen Covey, Dr. Richard Carlson, Dr. David Schwartz and many more. He began incorporating big ideas from these authors and writing about how they could be applied to everyday life.

Mark Manson

Who are you and why should I take you seriously?

Just some guy who reads a lot. And don’t take anything I say seriously. Unless you want to, of course. But the point is to think for yourself. If you like some of the things I say, great. If not, that’s fine too.

But, to answer your question, my name is Mark Manson. I’m 32 years old. I grew up in Austin, Texas. Went to school and lived in Boston. Traveled and lived all over the world for about seven years. Now I live in New York City. I enjoy cats and whiskey, although not at the same time.

How would you summarize your philosophy?

We’re all wrong about everything, some just a little less wrong than others. Everything sucks some of the time, and that’s OK — happiness is learning how to appreciate the struggles in your life. There are more stars in the universe than grains of sand on the planet, you couldn’t be special even if you wanted to be, so stop trying to prove yourself all the time. Trying to prove something to yourself and others is the root of most misery.

Life is about solving problems. Therefore, learn how to pick good problems. Avoiding problems just makes everything worse.

Human emotions are flawed. Always be skeptical of yourself, no matter what. Let go of your identity, you don’t really know who you are, nor should you…Appreciate love, but understand there are things more important than love.

Conflict is inevitable and often necessary. Sometimes things need to be broken before they can be made better.

Success

Unlike any other time in human history, people need to continually keep up with expanding knowledge and perpetually develop new skills to stay relevant and sustain their lifestyles. In every issue of Success magazine we will strive to bring you the thought leaders and success experts, both past and present, and reveal their key ideas and strategies to help you excel in every area of your personal and professional life. You also will be provided a unique window into the lives, practices and philosophies of today’s greatest achievers—top CEOs, revolutionary entrepreneurs and other extraordinary leaders.

Success is the only magazine that focuses on people who take full responsibility for their own development and income. Success readers understand that the world has changed and the classic employer-to-employee relationship has changed from a patriarchal to a transactional one. No longer can you expect a corporate training program and a predictable growth track. Our readers understand and embrace that they are responsible for their own long-term success and happiness, and need to be proactive in finding the inspiration, motivation and training to achieve their goals. Some may choose to start their own business but will prefer to keep it small—what some would call a micro business—so they will always have total control and visibility over its growth, spirit and contributions to society. Success readers desire the freedom and control to make all meaningful business decisions.

Tiny Buddha

“If you light a lamp for someone else it will also brighten your path.”

~Buddha

In our fast paced, always-on world, it’s not difficult to access information. It comes at you at breakneck speed. Articles, blog posts, status updates, tweets—there’s never a shortage of ideas to consider.

Gaining knowledge isn’t a problem. Applying it, on the other hand, is a lot more challenging, especially when you consider how little time we have throughout our busy days to stop, breathe, and just be.

Tiny Buddha is about reflecting on simple wisdom and learning new ways to apply it to our complex lives—complete with responsibilities, struggles, dreams, and relationships. Founded in 2009, Tiny Buddha has emerged as a leading resource for peace and happiness, with close to three million monthly readers and a vibrant community forum.

My name is Lori Deschene. Though I run this site, it is not mine. It’s ours. It’s not about me. It’s about us. Your stories and your wisdom are just as meaningful and useful as mine.

The site features stories, tips, and insights from readers of all ages, from all over the globe.

You’ll find posts about happiness, love, relationships, change, meaning, mindfulness, spirituality, simplicity, minimalism, letting go, and more. Much of it has its roots in Buddhism, but this is not a site about religion. It’s about ideas that make sense and make a big difference when applied.

Zen Habits

Zen Habits is about finding simplicity and mindfulness in the daily chaos of our lives. It’s about clearing the clutter so we can focus on what’s important, create something amazing, find happiness.
